St. Pete housing agency pays double appraised price for land

Following revelations that the St. Petersburg Housing Authority paid double the public appraisal for land for a new headquarters, the Times editorial board weighs in:

“This may not be the Taj Mahal courthouse in Tallahassee, but it looks to be in the same ZIP code,” the editorial due Saturday says of the office plan, which would include a wellness center for employees.

The housing authority, which is independent of City Hall but appointed by the mayor, paid $1 million for land off Gandy Boulevard without getting an appraisal — a standard practice at other government agencies. And while the agency said comparable sales were reviewed, examples provided to the Times actually weren’t so similar. One parcel had was a few blocks from the waterfront, another on high-end Beach Drive.
