More New York cab drivers wear bulletproof vests

New York, NY, United States (AHN) – Some livery cab drivers in New York began work this week wearing bulletproof vests.

The New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers has received a dozen vests from a Manhattan-based firm, Security USA.

The vests are worth about $5,000 and will be used by drivers who ply high-crime areas such as East New York in Brooklyn, Jamaica in Queens, and South Bronx.

The donation was the second from the firm, which began the community service project last December after a livery driver, Trevor Bell, was fatally shot in Queens.

At the time, Mayor Michael Bloomberg had said he did not think bulletproof vests were needed but said the federation, as a private institution, was free to take whatever precautions it deemed necessary to protect its members.
